AGAINST THE GRAIN - MOVEMENT & MENTORSHIP FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

FOR SCHOOLS & ORGANISATIONS

Against The Grain partners with schools, youth services, and community organisations to support young people who are disengaged, struggling with behaviour, or not responding to traditional support approaches.

Our programs provide a structured, movement-based alternative that improves engagement, emotional regulation, and overall wellbeing.

OUR APPROACH

We work with young people who are often labelled as “difficult”, “disengaged”, or “challenging”.

Our belief is simple:
they are not bad kids,  they just don’t respond to traditional models of support.

Instead of sit-down conversations or clinical environments, we use:

  • Structured physical activity
  • Mentorship and role modelling
  • Real-world conversations
  • Consistent, relationship-based support

This allows young people to regulate, engage, and open up in a way that feels natural to them.

WHAT WE DELIVER

We offer flexible program delivery depending on your setting:

 Group Programs (Most Popular)

  • 60–90 minute sessions
  • Weekly or fortnightly
  • Delivered on-site (school or organisation)
  • Group format (approx. 6–30 participants)

1:1 Support Sessions

  • For higher-need participants
  • Tailored movement + mentoring
  • Can complement behaviour support plans

Workshops / Short-Term Programs

  • 4–6 week blocks
  • Targeted intervention groups
  • Can align with wellbeing programs or referrals

OUR PROGRAMS

THE RIGHT PATH (Boys Program)

A structured program focused on guiding boys through discipline, emotional regulation, respect, and identity.

Designed for boys who:

  • Struggle with behaviour or anger
  • Lack strong male role models
  • Are disengaging from school or authority

HER PATH (Girls Program)

A movement and mindfulness-based program supporting girls through confidence, identity, and emotional wellbeing.

Focus areas include:

  • Self-worth and confidence
  • Social pressures and bullying
  • Emotional regulation and resilience

OUTCOMES YOU CAN EXPECT

Schools and organisations typically see improvements in:

  • Student engagement
  • Emotional regulation
  • Behaviour and participation
  • Confidence and social interaction
  • Willingness to attend and engage in support

Most importantly, young people begin to feel seen, understood, and supported.

HOW WE WORK WITH YOU

We aim to complement, not replace your existing supports.

We can:

  • Work alongside wellbeing teams
  • Support identified students or groups
  • Align with behaviour support plans
  • Provide informal feedback and insights

Minimal staff involvement is required — we handle delivery and engagement.

Our programs are particularly effective for young people who:

  • Are disengaged or at risk of disengagement
  • Struggle with behaviour or emotional regulation
  • Do not respond well to traditional interventions
  • Need a different approach to support

We typically begin with:

  • A short call or meeting
  • Understanding your students and needs
  • Recommending a program structure

From there, we can organise:

  • Trial sessions
  • Ongoing programs
  • Targeted group delivery
